About Rudder
Rudder is a set of guided daily practices designed to help you build a more meaningful, purposeful, and hopeful life — grounded in evidence rather than belief.
The Practices
- Mindful Moments — available any time of day, this is the foundational practice. A structured attention sequence through surroundings, body, and mind, followed by an AI-generated poem that captures what you noticed.
- Purposeful Mornings — a brief morning ritual to set your goals for the day and align them with what genuinely matters to you before the day begins.
- Hopeful Evenings — an evening reflection that reviews how the day unfolded, where you grew, and where you drifted — building evidence-based hope from your own lived experience.
- Meaningful Life — a practice for moments of transition or bigger-picture reflection, connecting your daily efforts to the larger arc of a meaningful life.
How It Works
- Choose a practice and Rudder guides you through it — prompts, breathing exercises, and timed reflection stages keep the session focused without requiring willpower.
- Each session takes only a few minutes. At the end, Rudder uses generative AI to create a short poem — a memento of the session — that you can save, share, or keep privately.
- Signed-in users can build a personal collection of mementos over time, creating a living record of their practice.
- Rudder is an introduction to these practices, not a substitute for going deeper. For Mindfulness in particular, working with a teacher or a structured programme like MBSR is worth pursuing once you've found the practice resonates.
The Underlying Approach
Rudder blends three traditions that reinforce each other:
- Mindfulness — present-moment, non-judgemental awareness, with a strong base of neuroscientific and clinical evidence behind it.
- Stoic Reflection — the ancient practice of morning preparation and evening review, validated by modern research in cognitive behavioural therapy and resilience.
- Observed Tendencies of the Universe— five orientations (Coherence, Creativity, Consciousness, Continuity, Curiosity) derived from the SixCEED Tendencies of the universe, a scientific framework showing how the universe's own inherent patterns can serve as a compass for a meaningful life. The framework is developed in detail in the book An Engineer's Search for Meaning.
